Kenyan crafts

Our Roots

KenNuela draws on the clothing traditions of Kenya's peoples – with respect for their meaning.

Kenya is home to more than forty communities, each with its own dress, colours and crafts. KenNuela is inspired by this richness – and we want the people behind it to benefit.

Maasai

The shuka – red, blue or checked cloth – and the famous beadwork, in which every colour carries meaning: red for courage and unity, blue for the sky, green for the land, white for peace.

Samburu and Turkana

Layered bead collars, headpieces and leather work of the north – bold, graphic and full of symbolism.

Swahili coast

The kikoi, a striped woven cloth, and the kanga, a printed cloth with a proverb – worn, gifted and treasured along the coast.

Lake Victoria – Luo and Suba

The communities around the lake, including our friends on Mfangano Island, with their own crafts and colours of water, fishing boats and green islands.

Our promise

We name the communities and crafts that inspire a piece, we work with artisans from these communities wherever possible and we pay them fairly.
